Children's National
Clinical Ethics Committee
The Summons is a proud partner of the CEP.
The Clinical Ethics Program (CEP) offers education and support/consult services to faculty, staff, and patients at Children’s National Hospital. Their team helps parents, patients, and providers navigate ethical concerns and dilemmas that can present in all aspects of patient care, such as:
-
End-of-life care
-
Conflict of interest
-
Equity of resources
-
Informed consent
-
Confidentiality
-
Cognitive dissonance and team ethics
-
Patient safety
-
Religious or cultural implications that affect care options
The Ethics Program has a Clinical Ethics Committee (CEC) consisting of both Children’s National employees and community members with a background in ethics. This committee meets monthly to discuss and advise on consults brought to the consult service and to promote education.
Members of this committee include ethicists, physicians and nurses from multiple specialties, social workers, chaplains, genetic counselors, parent navigators, attorneys, child life specialists, psychologists, and community members with a background in ethics. Click HERE to learn more.
Initiatives Supported By Your Contribution
Endowed Chair Fund
Enhancing the experience of physicians in critical care is crucial to advancing the health and well-being of pediatric patients.
Currently, Children's Hospital does not have an affiliated fellowship program for ethics, nor an endowed chair.
Leikin Lecture Series
Education is at the root of our work, thanks to the legacy built by Dr. Sanford Leikin, who propelled ethics research and education at Children's National from 1947 to 1997.
Every May, the CEP holds a half-day symposium in honor of Dr. Leikin's influence on clinical care.
A Solstice Soirée
In celebration of the work of the Committee, join us to honor their commitment to bettering the success of clinical health care through ethical guidance and support.
